BioNexus KC 25th Anniversary

Last week marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of one of Kansas City’s finest organizations, BioNexus KC. This celebration is my favorite night of the year for our bioscience community. The entire region comes together at the beautiful The Midland Theatre – Special Events to recognize the partnerships, collaborations, and scientific creativity that make Kansas City such a remarkable place to work.

One of the highlights for me is always the Science2Art auction. A former student of mine, the incredibly talented Garrett Kyser, creates striking micrographs that blend scientific precision with genuine artistry. I arrive every year with the goal of bringing one of his pieces home, and I am happy to report that the 2025 goal was achieved. The new piece is extraordinary.
Garrett’s story is one I never tire of telling. A few years ago, during Garrett’s freshman year microbiology poster session, Scott Leigh from Ronawk met him and invited him to interview. He earned the offer and then transformed it into a true career launch. In a short period of time he has mastered an impressive range of advanced technical skills, and his (well, mine now…) Science2Art pieces are living proof of that expertise.

Garrett is an asset to any organization fortunate enough to bring him on board. I am especially grateful that he found his professional home with people I respect deeply in our industry.
